At Dragon Claw Martial Arts (D.C.M.A) our British Martial Arts and Boxing Association recognised syllabus is based on a combination of different martial arts styles.
We believe this allows us the flexibility to use the core elements of traditional martial arts without the rigidity of having a single set ‘style’ to follow. Our syllabus continues to evolve and is reviewed periodically to ensure it is current, relevant, and as comprehensive as possible.
The D.C.M.A syllabus has its foundation and lineage in Lau Gar Kung Fu, Freestyle Kickboxing, Shotokan Karate and Muay Thai (Thai Boxing). In our syllabus we utilise a range of techniques; some over distance and some with specific focus on close-range. There is an absolute minimum of 6 years of regular training between a White and Black belt.
Our syllabus uses various individual drills, techniques, forms, sets and exercises to build a comprehensive martial arts program designed to teach not only the techniques themselves but the practical applications of self-defence. We believe that this is paramount to becoming proficient in our martial art and we encourage students to think critically about all of our techniques.
It's not just about how physically competent you are at a particular martial art or style but includes the psychological aspects of a threatening real-life situation. Being able to read a room, be alert to potential dangers and defuse a potentially dangerous situation are just some of the key aspects of your training at D.C.M.A. Foremost of these is that a martial artist’s first weapon is often their mind.
We also firmly believe that to truly grasp a technique or concept it is vital to understand the theory behind it. As you move towards your 1st Degree Black Belt instructors will explore the history of the various martial arts we teach, their benefits and drawbacks and cultivate your understanding so you are as ‘complete’ a martial artist as possible. By recognising our roots, we can hope to develop and improve upon our martial arts practise as our field of study moves with modern times.
The foundation of our syllabus is based upon some key concepts:
• Distance/Reach, Timing, Speed, Power and Accuracy.
• The 5 Ways we can create energy: Push, Slap, Push/Slap, Slap/Push, Rotational/Constant.
• Chin Na (Joint Locking): Finger, Wrist, Elbow, Shoulder, Neck, Waist, Knee, Foot and the ‘3 Bridges’ principle.
• The 6 ways our techniques can be implemented: Strike, Block, Grab, Lock, Throw and Release.
• Using physiology to our advantage, rather than using strength to beat strength.
• Power is relative, speed is absolute. Conditioning of the mind, conditioning of the body.
